The Investment Case for Canadian MicroCaps
Interview with Mathieu Martin, Portfolio Manager of the Rivemont MicroCap Fund
My guest on the show this week was Mathieu Martin, CFA, the Portfolio Manager of the Rivemont Microcap Fund. Mathieu is a microcap specialist who focuses on Canadian stocks. I have personally become fascinated with the differences between the US and Canadian markets, and I was excited to talk to Mathieu about:
· Where his love for microcap stocks began;
· The level of inefficiency he sees within Canadian microcaps;
· Why US-based investors don’t venture up to Canada as often as they should;
· What he learned after having a tough year in 2022; and
· Just how cheap Canadian microcaps are at the current moment.
Please enjoy the full episode here:
I have been only a tourist when it comes to Canadian stocks. So, when I had Mathieu on the podcast, I wanted to learn from him about the opportunity set in the Canadian market. In this clip, he talks about the number of microcap companies and how the lack of liquidity in the smaller end of the market keeps most investors away.
This was such a good episode and I especially enjoyed hearing Mathieu’s investing origin story. Not many people who drop out of college become portfolio managers. I hope you will take the time to hear about Mathieu’s journey and will stay tuned for the next episode of Compounders.
Sincerely,
Ben Claremon
